Last weekend we completed the TT2000 and used it as an opportunity to test some of our processes and systems in more challenging circumstances.

The TT2000 is an annual motorbike challenge that sees riders riding 2,000km between midday Friday and midday Sunday, and accumulating points from checkpoints along the way. Checkpoints are all over Te Waipounamu (the South Island) and are allocated different point values. Riders must cover the 2,000km within 48 hours and accumulate 2,000 checkpoint points to be considered as having completed the challenge.

This year's event started in Greymouth and finished in Milton. We rode to a program that saw us ride 700km on Friday afternoon, 1,000km on Saturday and 300km on Sunday morning - travelling from west to east over Lewis Pass, through Canterbury to the east coast, and then pretty much zigzagging down the rest of the island, taking in Central Otago, east and west Southland, the southern coast and the Catlins.

We were seriously disrupted on Sunday morning due to an emergency road closure that added a 100km + detour to our planned route. But we managed to complete the challenge with 5 minutes to spare and I believe we were last in before the 48-hour cutoff.

Our ride through the Waimakariri and Rakaia Gorges reminded us just how stunning they are and has us looking at putting together a short loop tour package through the 2 gorges - so watch this space as we get that finalised.

The other thing that was reinforced to us over the weekend is the outstanding motorcycling culture and camaraderie that exists in New Zealand - highlighted by 223 bikes being registered for the TT2000 this year, with riders coming from all over the country. The biker experience associated with events such as this, rallies, casual group rides, organised group rides and charity rides, is something else we'd like to share and give everyone access to. So, we're looking at adding such events to our published offerings - again, watch this space as we get these on line.
